The Cooling Efficiency Ratio (CER for short) has increasingly been discussed as a key performance indicator in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry for several weeks. Where does this new indicator come from and what does it reveal?

The CER has been defined as part of the development of DIN EN 50600 (standard for the equipment and infrastructure of data centers) and documented in EN 50600-4-7. It is intended as an indicator for classifying and reviewing the effectiveness of data center cooling systems.

In this process, the variables
Q(removed) = the total amount of heat removed from the data center (annually) in kWh
and
E(cooling) = the energy consumption (annually) of the cooling systems in kWh are used as follows to calculate the CER:

It is essential that both Q(removed) and E(cooling) are measured in kWh for the same period of time (T).

The formula now shows us relatively clear that the effectiveness of cooling can only be specified in relation to a defined data center. The industry must not make the same mistake it made some time ago with the PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and use the CER to evaluate insulated air conditioning systems or individual refrigeration units.

Similarly to the PUE, the CER is only suitable for measuring the efficiency of a cooling system in a real data center environment or installation. It cannot be applied to a component or infrastructure. To illustrate this once again – the CER only relates to the efficiency of the cooling system in a defined data center; the PUE relates to the efficiency of an entire data center. Even if the CER is not a suitable indicator for evaluating individual air conditioning units/systems, another key performance indicator has been introduced that further emphasizes the importance of the issue of energy efficiency in data center cooling – and this may contribute to increased market awareness.

news-2159 Thu, 02 Apr 2020 16:09:02 +0200 Blanking Panels http://www.stulz.de/en/newsroom/blog/blanking-panels-2159/ Blanking Panels

Low energy consumption and optimal cooling performance are two fundamental aspects of advanced and efficient server cooling. Free slots in your server rack, between your servers, impair cooling by creating air shorts and allowing unused cold air to flow through. This unused cold air mixes with the heated air at the back of the rack, reducing the temperature of the warm corridor.

Air leakage is the mixing of cold supply air and warm exhaust air within the system, which is caused by an open air flow and prevents the efficient use of the cold supply air. Blanking panels offer the possibility of covering free slots for blades in server racks at the front, thereby directing the air flow specifically through the servers and making more efficient use of the air flow. By using blanking panels, cold and warm air flows can be separated from each other and prevented from mixing. This separation is essential for efficient and cost-effective cooling.

Both the air conditioners and the servers work most efficiently if the cooled air is only directed to the areas where it is needed. The cold air prevented from mixing by the blanking panels can be better used for direct air supply to the servers, where it is optimally used by the servers' own thermal management.

news-2103 Mon, 09 Sep 2019 13:31:00 +0200 Advances in air conditioning technology take efficiency to new levels. http://www.stulz.de/en/newsroom/press-release/advances-in-air-conditioning-technology-take-efficiency-to-new-levels-2103/ STULZ, pioneers in air conditioning technologies, has upgraded the DX models of its proven CyberAir... STULZ, pioneers in air conditioning technologies, has upgraded the DX models of its proven CyberAir 3 DX series – delivering even greater efficiency savings and increased cooling capacity.

Building on the success of the CyberAir 3 DX, STULZ has taken energy efficiency to the next level with the launch of the CyberAir 3PRO DX series. Offering exceptional Energy Efficiency Ratios (EER) and Airflow Efficiency Ratios (AER), this enhanced range of precision cooling units ensures maximum reliability for mission critical applications, as well as achieving significant savings in energy and costs.

Providing the energy-saving advantages of indirect free cooling, the Stulz GES hybrid systems are available with outputs in excess of 100 kW. These new developments offer all output levels – from 30 kW to 130 kW and the provision of cooling systems with tandem compressors – capable of handling partial loads- potentially increasing further energy savings.

The range also includes units with integrated fans, available with standard ASD (Downflow) and ASU (Upflow) air conduction. By optimising the design, the units are now considerably more efficient than previous versions.

The key design benefits of the CyberAir 3PRO DX series include: higher cooling capacities with a minimum footprint, lower refrigerant requirements, and high sensitive cooling capacity (SHR). In addition, the units also boast the largest possible heat exchanger and filter surface areas for minimal pressure drops.

Flexibility is another significant advantage – the size, cooling capacity, air conduction and control system can be tailored to meet the precise requirements of mission critical facilities. In addition, as the supply air temperatures of the cooling systems lie within the recommended range of between 18 °C and 27 °C, they are fully ASHRAE-compliant.

The CyberAir 3PRO DX range currently provides five different cooling options, to help achieve the ideal balance between investment, operating costs and energy efficiency. Each design is optimised to help ensure the highest levels of IT uptime in mission-critical environments, through cost-effective thermal control.

STULZ’s new EC Tower, is designed for rapid deployment and requires a third of the footprint of some conventional precision air-conditioning units.

Temperature management for IT infrastructure is critical, even for smaller server and technical rooms, and precision air-conditioning is vital. To meet this demand, a new split air-conditioning system – the EC Tower – has been launched by STULZ UK, offering high levels of reliability and precision control, in a fraction of the footprint of conventional air-conditioning systems.

“All too often, poorly specified cooling technology leads to erratic climate control, increased operating expenditure and costly disruption to IT operations. Downtime is not an option regardless of the size of the server room. However, precision cooling solutions, such as the EC Tower series, are ideally suited to technical spaces that cannot compromise on reliability, space or cost,” comments Phil McEneaney, Head of Sales, STULZ UK.

Reduced energy costs

The EC Tower series combines the proven reliability of STULZ's precision air-conditioning technology with the advantages of modern inverter outdoor condensing unit. A split climate solution, the EC Tower range can be rapidly deployed for heat loads of 5kW to 24 kW. A key advantage of the outdoor condensing unit is the ability to support dynamic capacity adjustment of the rated cooling capacity – which delivers significant energy savings.

“For SMEs this is an important consideration – energy efficiency is high on the agenda from a corporate responsibility perspective, but it also improves the bottom line,” McEneaney adds. The EC Tower series is designed for continuous, 24/7/ cooling of technical rooms. While conventional comfort air-conditioning units can use up to 40% of their cooling capacity in dehumidification, the EC Tower generates between 90% and 100% of sensible cooling capacity which reduces dehumidification and lost performance. The high Sensible Heat Ratio (SHR) value eliminates problems associated with removing moisture via the evaporator which can be an issue in technical environments, causing static build up within the technical equipment.

An additional benefit of the EC Tower is the increased distance between the internal and external condensing unit of up to 100 metres which enables flexible installation.

Space-saving solution

“We have listened to the needs of customers and developed a space-saving solution that offers the benefits of easy installation and precision control,” concludes McEneaney. When space is at a premium, this configuration will prove ideal for end users.”

In fact, the outdoor unit requires just 35% of the footprint of a conventional precision air-conditioning condenser and operation is also much quieter. Since the compressor is located in the outdoor unit, no noise emissions and no additional heat are generated in the technical room.

With the provision of the standardised EC Tower and inverter-controlled outdoor condensing units, delivery is also much faster at around two weeks. A wide range of accessories come as standard, including: fault indicators, fire shut down, common alarm, electric heating, EC compressor and much more.

First joint product: Watercooled Micro Data Center with 40 kW combined cooling capacity and innovative waste heat recovery.

The innovative waste heat concept from Cloud&Heat is now available as an equipment option for the STULZ micro data center solution. In return, STULZ will extend its service and sales operation to the German company and assist with its international expansion.

STULZ, a global leading specialist in precision air conditioning, has announced a new strategic partnership with Cloud&Heat Technologies, a specialist in energy-efficient, scalable and reliable data centers. As part of this new technical and sales alliance, the hot water direct cooling system developed by Dresden-based Cloud&Heat is to be marketed in future as an equipment option for the STULZ MicroDC series.

In addition to IT cooling, efficient heat recovery is at the heart of Cloud&Heat’s solution. Its patented technology enables the company to bring the heat produced by the IT equipment to a constant temperature of 60°C degrees and exports it for heating buildings and water. This technique not only lowers the cost of cooling the data center, but also of heating and hot water. This concept therefore helps to massively reduce the CO2 footprint of IT systems.

With the Watercooled Micro Data Center, the two companies have designed an air-conditioned 19" rack for high-density servers with IT loads of up to 40 kW per rack. The modern cooling concept combines the advantages of a hot water direct cooling system with the recirculation capacity of a side cooler - energy savings of around 60 percent can be achieved compared to classic circulating air cooling systems. The water cooling system is available in various versions for blade servers or GPU computing.

The combination of cloud-based computing power and decentralized heat generation offers STULZ customers a proven solution satisfying a broad range of applications. Cloud&Heat systems have already been successfully deployed worldwide in the areas of high-performance computing and on-premise cloud. The company also supports data center operators and project developers in the drive for green building initiatives and prosumer solutions in particular in edge computing architectures, IoT and digitization projects.

As well as the technology for recovering server waste heat, Cloud&Heat will also be providing STULZ with the software for the pump control, temperature regulation and remote monitoring. In exchange, STULZ will support the cloud specialist by providing service and maintenance and assisting with the international expansion of its sales activities. STULZ currently has 20 subsidiaries in globally important target markets such as the U.S., China and Brazil, and its extensive partner network has a presence in over 140 countries worldwide. The Watercooled Micro Data Center is available globally and can be purchased from STULZ and Cloud&Heat.

Reliable, scalable infrastructure solution for edge computing, hybrid cloud and Industry 4.0 projects

STULZ’s new Micro Data Center, The STULZ Micro DC, can be configured with all the key design aspects of a bricks and mortar data center, including critical power control and monitoring, fire suppression, physical security and precision cooling.

STULZ introduces a micro data center for low to high density applications. The STULZ Micro DC provides a cost-effective solution to quickly build up local IT capacity where it is needed. This modular, highly efficient solution is easily scalable to meet both the needs of today and the growth of tomorrow – even in places where space is limited. The standard 19" rack system supports assemblies ranging from 40U to 48U in height and can be equipped with accessories such as a UPS, PDU, cable management system, LED lights, fire suppression, cameras, software for environmental monitoring and environmental control.

Micro DCs are available as a single-rack variant or as a locally integrated collection of up to six racks. To ensure reliable operation in harsh environments, the cabinet can be fitted with  dust and water or intrusion protection in compliance with IP55 specification. Possible applications of the STULZ Micro DC range from facilitating edge-computing architectures and IoT installations to connecting IT to production lines and manufacturing facilities.

As standard, the Micro DC features an Integrated Cooling System (ICS™) for low to medium density applications which can be mounted internally or on the side. An internal mount provides 3kW – 5kW of precise cooling and uses 6U, whilst a side-mount provides 5kW – 25kW of cooling without using any U space. The ICS is available in chilled water and direct expansion systems.

For high performance applications, STULZ has partnered with CoolIT Systems to offer the innovative Chip-to-Atmosphere™ cooling solution, which combines the standard ICS with a direct liquid-to-chip system - Direct Contact Liquid Cooling (DCLC™). This state-of-the-art technology uses the exceptional thermal conductivity of liquid to provide concentrated cooling to the hottest components inside a server, enabling very high density configurations. By incorporating DCLC technology from CoolIT, the STULZ Micro DC can dissipate extreme heat loads of up to 80 kW per rack. This widens the range of applications of the Micro DC including a variety of processor-intensive applications in science and research, big data and engineering.

The highly efficient and energy-saving direct liquid-to-chip cooling solution can be flexibly integrated into existing water circuits such as condenser return water, chiller return water and facility auxiliary water. Counter cooling with a temperature spanning 2°C to 35°C is carried out using chillers, cooling towers, fluid coolers or conventional heat exchangers. CoolIT DCLC technology has been embraced by the majority of the main hardware manufacturers which now deploy their servers with embedded DCLC technology.

Chiller using R-1234ze refrigerant now available in the output range 300 - 1000 kW

STULZ GmbH is extending its product portfolio to include new "ze chillers" in the CyberCool 2 series. These employ proven CyberCool 2 technology and have been specially optimized for use with climate-friendly HFO-1234ze refrigerant.

Hamburg, 1/31/2018 – Hamburg-based STULZ GmbH is expanding its product portfolio with additional "ze chillers" in the CyberCool 2 series. These new chillers are available in air-cooled versions and are designed for use with climate-friendly R-1234ze refrigerant. This HFO blend has a very low global warming potential and, in the context of (EU) regulation no. 517/2014 and the concomitant refrigerant shortage, is a future-proof and efficient alternative to conventional HFC-based refrigerants. STULZ CyberCool 2 ze chillers are available in various output capacities from 300 to 1000 kW and offer reliable and efficient cooling solutions for medium and large data centers, telecommunications and industrial applications.

Like the CyberCool 2 chillers that were introduced in 2013, the ze series is also equipped with the largest possible EC fans and sound-insulated compressor chambers to reduce noise emissions. Thanks to the dynamic control technology developed by STULZ, the CyberCool 2 also supports indirect free cooling. This intelligent way of changing over between compressor operation and indirect free cooling facilitates particularly resource-saving operation coupled with maximum energy efficiency. STULZ’s Mix Mode Boost technology can also use the entire surface of DX coils without needing to regulate the fan speed, which further increases energy efficiency and significantly reduces operating costs. Microchannel condensers constructed entirely of aluminum and equipped with air baffles also optimize flow into the inner coil elements. These STULZ CyberCool 2 ze series chillers are available now. Alternatives to conventional refrigerants are currently being tested.

The... Teraco in collaboration with STULZ is celebrating winning an Award at the DCD 2017 Awards. The companies were commended for increasing its energy efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint in a very challenging climate at the Isando Data Centre 7 in Johannesburg.

Hamburg, 2017/12/20 – Now in their eleventh year, the DCD Awards went global for the first time and celebrated the best projects, technologies, companies, individuals and teams from across the industry. The 2017 event took place in December at London's Royal Lancaster Hotel. Approximately 700 guests gathered to celebrate these hotly contested awards which received over 200 entries from 30 countries.

Barrister turned comedian and broadcaster Clive Anderson, who hosted the event presented the Energy Efficiency Improvers Award (sponsored by Starline) to Brendan Dysel, Head of Infrastructure Management at Teraco, who commented: "The ambient conditions in South Africa provide great challenges to meet data centre efficiencies deemed the norm in global circles. The STULZ partnership with Teraco proved most successful and the DCD award for Energy Efficiency Improvers Award speaks volumes. The benchmark has been set and the engineering teams will now continue to improve on our current designs and sustainable operations."

There was stiff competition from DigiPlex (Norway), Liberty Global in the UK and vXchnge in USA. Teraco is the first provider of resilient, vendor neutral data environments in South Africa and is leading the way in the region by making energy efficiency one of its highest priorities.

Kurt Plötner, Vice president of STULZ Germany commented, "We are delighted that Teraco and STULZ South Africa have received this accolade. It is a tremendous achievement which would not have been possible without the sales, product management and design engineers in Hamburg being absolutely focused and determined to build an energy efficient, state of the art data centre in Johannesburg’s challenging climate. Needless to say that we at STULZ are proud to be associated with Teraco and their team!"

The 27,500m2 colocation facility has a net cooling capacity of 2 MW, supplied by a chilled water system which is concurrently maintainable, with three CyberCool 2 chillers (N+1) and 14 CyberAir 3 chilled water units from STULZ. Due to extremely hot summers, the ambient temperature reaches 40°C. However, with water temperatures of 22°C/14°C Teraco is able to switchover into mix-mode at 20°C ambient temperature (approx. 5.700 h/a) to increase the energy efficiency by reducing the electrical power consumption of the chiller. The design of the installation allows the use of free cooling for approximately 65% of the year, saving a significant amount of energy (circa 45%) and reducing Teraco's carbon footprint.

STULZ were also proud to supply the cooling solutions for The MareNostrum Data Center in Spain which won the World’s Most Beautiful Data Center Award.

These EC versions contain two complete, redundant refrigerant circuits and ensure high efficiency in partial load. The system reacts quickly to dynamic load fluctuations avoiding ON/OFF cycling to guarantee an extended equipment life.

The Indoor chillers are designed to fit through all standard doorways for easy installation. The separation of indoor unit and external condenser/dry cooler as well as the general use of low noise components match stringent noise restrictions. Installing the chiller close to the consumer reduces heat losses while still ensuring energy-efficient, reliable cooling.

The design of all CyberCool Indoor units furthermore allows easy maintenance, since important components such as compressors, expansion valves and pumps are accessible from the front. Moreover, STULZ offers an extensive portfolio of options, a global network with prompt service and proactive support.

news-1715 Tue, 07 Nov 2017 16:17:00 +0100 STULZ introduces the new range of air handling units http://www.stulz.de/en/newsroom/press-release/stulz-introduces-the-new-range-of-air-handling-units-1715/ The totally redesigned AHU systems are available in eleven sizes from 30 kW to 520 kW The totally redesigned AHU systems are available in eleven sizes from 30 kW to 520 kW

The series is used for air conditioning everything from data centers to hotels, from commercial buildings to industrial sites.

As power densities increase, a new design factor is coming to the fore - precision air conditioning solutions.  Air handling units (AHU) incorporate all the air conditioning equipment of a data center in one outdoor container, therefore creating more space for productive IT systems inside the actual server area. STULZ introduced its first air handling system back in 2015. With the CyberHandler 2, the specialist for reliable air conditioning solutions is now launching a comprehensively redesigned successor.

The CyberHandler 2 series includes eleven output ratings from 30 to 520 kW. It combines free cooling, adiabatic cooling and mechanical chilling in one sealed outdoor container. The choice of chilling methods includes chilled water coils, scroll compressors or a redundant DX system with external condenser. If high availability is required, a fully weather-independent air conditioning system with a high level of redundancy can be designed, and can work in mixed mode for great energy efficiency.

One of the key new features of this series is the optimized dual brazed plate heat exchanger. This improves the mean efficiency of the overall system, enabling a larger distance between flaps which reduces air-side pressure drops, and slashes the average energy consumption of the fan units. Another new feature is the design of the brazed plate heat exchanger module and the floor pan of the filtering section. In the new series, both these areas are made entirely of stainless steel.

Like its predecessor, the CyberHandler 2 saves energy through free cooling. As the air conduction is indirect, no contaminated outside air gets into the data center, and filter systems also have less to deal with. When combined with an adiabatic module, the runtimes of high-consumption mechanical chilling can be cut to a minimum. Up to 70% energy savings can be achieved compared with pure DX cooling. The overall more simple installation of electrical distribution boards and pipework also brings cost advantages. Simply by reducing the electrical infrastructure, possible CAPEX savings of 6 to 8% can be achieved, depending on project conditions, compared with air conditioning solutions with traditional closed-circuit air conditioning technology.

With the CyberHandler 2 Select, planners and refrigeration specialists can now obtain powerful configuration software for STULZ's new series of air handling units. This software helps with project planning and the selection of AHU systems, and facilitates tender preparation. The package includes servicing, start-up and planning and documentation functions, such as the calculation of lifecycle costs and partial PUE values.

The new STULZ WPAmini delivers a cooling capacity of 160 kW in a very small space

Two separate refrigerant circuits increase operational reliability. Four scroll compressors guarantee energy efficiency, even in small partial load stages.

Hamburg, 2017/08/22 – With the WPAmini, STULZ is expanding its product line of air-cooled chillers. The compact chillers deliver a cooling capacity of up to 160 kW and have been optimized for use in data centers or industrial chilling. The chillers are operated with two redundant refrigerant circuits to increase operational reliability. The circuits are controlled on the basis of the required cooling capacity, so that the respective circuit is activated with maximum efficiency when minimal cooling is needed. The WPAmini is equipped with maximum size aluminum microchannel condensers and four scroll compressors, which are activated and deactivated (25, 50, 75, 100 %) in stages, in line with the current heat load. The compressor operating time can be reduced to a minimum using the Free Cooling facility that can be incorporated as an option. This considerably cuts power consumption and operating costs. Three operating modes are available in all: DX mode, Free Cooling mode and Mixed mode. In Mixed mode, cooling capacity is generated by means of simultaneous Free Cooling and compressor cooling. In this way, significant energy savings can be achieved even at moderate outdoor temperatures.

For noise-sensitive locations, the WPAmini is also optionally available in a "Low Noise" version. Here, the compressors are enclosed in a special sound-insulated housing, which lowers the volume to conversation level. The chillers can also be fitted with optional fan diffusers. The improved air conduction these provide further reduces the noise level, as well as electricity consumption. The WPAmini can also run in extreme local climates. Its operating limits range from -40 to +50 °C, depending on the model. The switch gear cabinet is generously dimensioned at the factory, ensuring space for optional additional electrical equipment. There is therefore no need for additional switch gear cabinets or extensions, with the interface problems these sometimes entail. Furthermore, the WPAmini series already satisfies the requirements of Ecodesign or ErP Directive Stage 2018.

news-1585 Wed, 16 Aug 2017 16:00:00 +0200 How can I compare chillers for data center applications? http://www.stulz.de/en/newsroom/blog/how-can-i-compare-chillers-for-data-center-applications-1585/ Every planner/consultant or customer is familiar with this problem. Once the decision to purchase a... Every planner/consultant or customer is familiar with this problem. Once the decision to purchase a system has been made, the tendering process begins and you are confronted with the major task of weighing up which product is most suitable for this project.

This article deals with the question of what technical data can be used to compare equipment, and how we can question or verify the credibility of this data relatively easily.

Before we get started, we should first be clear about what our main focus is. What are the most important factors for my project? Is the focus on capital expenditure (CapEx), operating expenditure (OpEx), noise levels, or the easiest possible integration in an existing system? Comparing capital expenditure is relatively straightforward. However, it's very important to ensure that both machines can feature the same equipment. Does the standard version of a chiller have something to offer that is only available as an optional extra in the other model?

Where integration is concerned, the key aspect is collaboration with the manufacturer, and how flexible they are. Here, comparisons are already getting more difficult. However, it's clear that some manufacturers are more flexible than others. In this context, flexibility means far more than simply adding to the standard range of options; it could involve a larger compressor with the same footprint, the adaptation of load entry points, specific electrical requirements, and a great deal more.

Once we have gathered documentation for the same basic configuration from two or more manufacturers, the great comparison of technical data can commence. Defined KPIs such as EER and ESEER are a popular means of comparison. But how meaningful are these really? To gain more clarity, let's first define what these two values are actually about. First of all, here is an explanation of how they are calculated:

Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)

Cooling capacity

Power consumption

EER is the ratio of cooling capacity to power consumption. This value should be as high as possible (i.e. not much energy is required to produce the desired cooling capacity).

With increasing power of Russian data-centers the engineering infrastructure role is becoming more and more important. For the present building from zero level data-centers are minority, but at these projects designers are able to use the most interesting and energy efficiency solutions. However usually they have to use resourcefulness and mother wit for DC implementing in already built facilities in which innovation solutions using unreal and too expensive.

During conference we are going to consider wide spectrum of themes about sustainability engineering infrastructure, its management and operation, cost in depending on availability and reliability, new technology using potential.

Conference audience:

Owners and top-managers of data centers, CIOs, IT-directors, construction directors, heads of operation departments, experts from IT and engineering departments

Expected number of delegates - more than 350 participants.

We try to find answers on many practical questions which are important for every DC manager who works in data-center industry:

  • Low PUE: is it really important?
  • Who helps in data-center creation? Designer, consultant, system integrator, vendor?
  • How to find area for data-center? Choice criterion
  • Is modular data-center expensive or already not?
  • DCIM – is it required?
  • How to cut costs for upgrade?
  • Failures: how to resist? What the prevention methods are more effective?
  • Russian national DC standard – is it necessary or not? Could it help?
  • How to build operation department?
  • Where and how to find the ways for power consumption decreasing?
  • Will be a place in Russia for alternative energy sources?

Besides this we will know about new vendors and suppliers offers for building small and large DC engineering infrastructure, about its efficiency, about new functional opportunities of standard solutions and non-standard methods for building and design reliable DC engineering systems.

Eager to start and filled with curiosity, I began my apprenticeship as a Cooling Technology Mechatronics Engineer together with other new apprentices who wanted to qualify in various professions. At the same time, I began my degree in Business Management at university.

At my apprenticing company they first showed us all the departments. A flood of new and unknown experiences followed. For me, as a newbie to the world of work, it was very exciting. I was quickly involved in all processes, and following an initial induction in Production, was able to get started on the everyday work of a Cooling Technology Mechatronics Engineer. I was already aware that I was a woman learning what was traditionally a man's job. I was in fact the only woman in my class at vocational college.

The early days were full of new discoveries and experiences in all aspects of the work - not just theoretical but also practical: carrying out the work steps and handling special tools and, last but not least, getting on with my colleagues. For me, it was nothing like school. During my apprenticeship, I finally managed to put my knowledge to practical use, and find out about interesting things in much more depth. My colleagues in the various parts of Production, with their many different technical qualifications, were always good purveyors of knowledge and skills (I'm deliberately not using the word "teacher", as it went far beyond just teaching). I spent most of my apprenticeship at the company.

The combined apprenticeship & degree course

But my life then rapidly came to include vocational college and university. The amount of theory increased, but because I could see the relationships both in the refrigerant circuit and in operational processes, I was able to understand the different subjects more quickly. This link between theory and practice helped me with many tests, because transferring the knowledge became so much easier. Lessons at the vocational college were organized by topic. It was always fascinating to hear reports from my fellow students, who were a colorful bunch from companies with a great range of customers. There was everything from dispensing systems and cold stores to doctors' surgeries and office complexes, data centers and ice skating rinks.

Not only did I learn what kind of chilling system is used and what features it must have - I also learned what physical and chemical processes make the difference between them. In the company where I was doing my apprenticeship, I started in Production. This greatly helped me get to grips with the subject and acquire a basic understanding of the refrigerant circuit: all the many individual parts have to be assembled to create a perfectly functioning unit. And it did actually function without problem, I checked with colleagues in Quality Assurance. There, the completed unit is connected and tested to ensure it's working perfectly. I was also involved in this part of production, and learned to individually configure the software of the device and perform a function test on it.

On site at the customer's premise

Later on during my apprenticeship, I went to visit customers with service engineers. Here, I was able to work on the complete refrigerant circuit: I was taken along to install and start up new systems, perform maintenance and repairs and, finally, help with troubleshooting failed units in emergencies.

In addition, I spent five weeks in Service at a subsidiary in the Netherlands. A brilliant experience! At this time, Direct Free Cooling was already extremely popular in the Netherlands. Our Dutch engineers have developed duct systems for entire buildings and seamlessly integrated them in companies' own precision air conditioning units. I learned a great deal working on such complex systems.

After three years, I completed my apprenticeship as a "Hamburg Regional Champion".

Digitization continues to grow without alternative in almost all walks of life, and provides new possibilities for the documentation and logging of technical systems.

Safety and availability

Today, logbooks for chilling systems must be available to view at any time and in several places at once in a company, in order to satisfy stringent requirements in relation to legal stipulations, certifications and traceability.

This presents a major logistical challenge for conventional documentation resources. A large amount of time has to be spent copying and distributing paper logbooks, so that the information they contain can be available to all and also protected against loss.

The complete digitization of logbooks for chilling systems ensures that the documentation is freely available wherever needed, without any additional time being spent and with absolutely no delay. What's more, digital data can be protected better and more effectively.

It is especially important to protect data against loss and unauthorized access. What matters here is a comprehensive data backup concept in the data center on the one hand, and a variety of precisely harmonized safety mechanisms in the system architecture on the other hand. Encryption of stored data, among other things, is mandatory.

In order to satisfy the legal requirements for digital documentation and to make full use of further advantages, such as easy handling and high data security, the use of professional software such as the STULZ Service Portal is indispensable.

CyberCool 2 Non-Glycol² – excellence in efficiency

The CyberCool 2 Non-Glycol² was entered as an innovative and environmentally friendly chilling concept in the Data Center Air Conditioning & Cooling category of the German Data Center Awards.

For more information go to: www.future-thinking.de/einreichungen/cybercool-2-non-glycol-excellenz-in-effizienz (in German).

Description of project:
With the "CyberCool 2 Non-Glycol²" (2 plate heat exchangers, terminal temperature difference 2 K), STULZ has significantly reduced the pressure drops inherent in conventional non-glycol systems. In combination with the new "Mix Mode Boost" technology from STULZ, the Free Cooling range is extended by up to 20 %. In addition, "Mix Mode Boost" reduces the nominal current of the compressor still further, making it more efficient.

Objectives:
Customers these days want to save energy costs, use Free Cooling and in the process, dispense with critical substances in the data center. Using the "CyberCool 2 Non-Glycol²" outside the building keeps the enclosed glycol circuit outside the sensitive area. In one sentence: Minimize the energy drawback of conventional systems whilst reducing running costs.

Innovation:
STULZ has developed a system which neutralizes the drawbacks of all comparable systems. In addition, the variety of options and flexibility of the "CyberCool 2 Non-Glycol²" make the product outstandingly adaptable to the project in question. The unique high return temperatures of up to 35 °C ensure maximum Free Cooling capacity and running time.

Added value:
Return temperatures of up to 35 °C result in above-average maximization of Free Cooling usage, making it top of its class for energy. In addition, the technical design allows earlier switching points and fewer pressure drops than any of the comparable systems available on the market. The Free Cooling period is extended by another 20 % approximately, reducing the electricity bill.

Why should this project win the award?

  • Incomparable return temperatures of up to 35 °C ensure maximum Free Cooling times and capacities.
  • Use "QUICK START", the capacity limiting system to prevent current spikes and a second power supply to satisfy data center requirements.
  • The innovative "MIX MODE BOOST" increases efficiency in mix mode and reduces the nominal current of the compressor to a minimum without additional consumption of resources such as water, for example.
  • CyberCool 2 Non-Glycol² - the customized solution with minimized CO2 footprint Climate. Customized. Made in Germany.

news-1499 Thu, 23 Feb 2017 15:40:21 +0100 Digital Transformation and Industry 4.0 - a brief look ahead http://www.stulz.de/en/newsroom/blog/digital-transformation-1499/ Surely not many companies haven't asked themselves at least once what influence increasing... Surely not many companies haven't asked themselves at least once what influence increasing digitization and Industry 4.0 will have on their business model. STULZ specialized in data center air conditioning back in 1971, and as a company we have experienced many digital trends in the flesh. But if you get to grips with the latest reports talking about the digital transformation and Industry 4.0, you quickly realize that this time we are facing something bigger. And one thing I notice is that the arguments are sometimes rather drastic. My impression is this: If you don't begin digital conversion immediately, your company will be finished in a few years' time. Or you can secure your future, turn everything upside down and undergo digital transformation.

Well, I don't see it as drastic as all that, but all companies should take action. They should analyze their business models, and they really need to try and determine to what degree digital transformation is necessary. Overhasty steps and digital actionism can rapidly backfire and wipe out a lot of capital. Companies specializing in complex industrial goods know that personal consultation, for example, cannot be replaced 1:1 by online consultation. However, when carrying out an analysis many companies will realize that they already started along the road to digital transformation a long time ago (see next paragraph).

Another difficulty during analysis is that digitization, digital transformation, IoT, big data, cloud computing and Industry 4.0 are often all lumped together, so no one can figure out whether they are affected and what exactly is important for the company.

The fact is: every company is affected, whatever they call the process. Consumer behavior in relation to products, services, communication, etc. is changing due to powerful mobile devices, fast data networks and state-of-the-art data centers. In addition, all data are collected and every technical device is connected. This is what the digital future looks like – and it is as inevitable as the rising of the sun in the morning.

Some negative aspects are undoubtedly apparent, but there are numerous advantages and opportunities that consumers and companies can use to their benefit. Every entrepreneur should ask themselves this: Exactly where must I digitally expand my business, my production, etc. in order to still find buyers in future, focus production better, or sell my services? The localization of real-time data and their use in personalized customer apps, in particular, offer brick-and-mortar stores the means of making personalized offers that are dispatched directly, for example. Here, the right timing matters. And for this you need to know exactly when a customer is ready to buy or – better still – when he has to buy, because the refrigerator is empty or his shoes are worn out.

Have the digital transformation and Industry 4.0 changed cooling solutions for data centers?

The digital transformation is without doubt one of the primary drivers of change in air conditioning systems for data centers, but further important reasons also exist: rising energy prices, changing regulations, new environmental requirements, higher safety standards, the allowance of more heat and humidity in data centers, and geographical considerations are some additional factors.

However, it is impossible to deny that new data center trends have arisen due to digital changes, especially in recent years. Digitization generates more data, which has led to the construction of many new, larger data centers. Moreover, existing data centers are regularly being equipped with new, more powerful servers.

But modernization in the form of new servers confronts data center operators with problems. Servers can easily be replaced with more powerful devices. This inevitably leads to a higher heat load over the existing surface area. The air conditioning units can generally be modernized, but it is not that simple to increase the number of chillers for removing the higher heat load. If a data center was planned for a heat load of 1 MW 10 years ago, and now 3 MW and more is being produced in the same space, the entire infrastructure – pipes, pumps, raised floors – has to be renovated. Additionally, more space is required in the data center for more air conditioning units, and further space for chillers is also needed outside the building.

Modernization with chillers and air handling units

In my opinion, data center operators have various means at their disposal for converting an existing structure. When renovating an existing CW system, chillers must be used that are specially designed for data center air conditioning, and feature maximum availability and Free Cooling, for example. This minimizes the energy disadvantages of conventional chillers. A standard chiller from the building's air conditioning system is out of place here, because it does not satisfy the project-specific requirements of a data center.

It is precisely for this reason that we developed our CyberCool 2. With the CyberCool 2, we offer a chiller with maximized heat exchanger surface areas and maximum size fans, which exploit the available space down to the last millimeter to improve air conduction. With the addition of effective Free Cooling and newly designed air conduction, the cooling capacity over an existing area is increased. Combined with maximum size CW indoor units, existing space can be put to better use, and then nothing stands in the way of expansion and more powerful servers.

Billing by cooling capacity requirement initially available for customers of Swiss company Walter Meier

Hamburg (Germany), 03.02.2017 – STULZ, one of the world’s leading suppliers of operation-critical air-conditioning solutions for data centers, is extending its range of services. From February, customers in Switzerland will have the additional option of financing STULZ cooling solutions on the cooling-as-a-service model. The new service has become possible as a result of cooperation with Swiss company Burland Energy SA.

COOLaaS is a complete solution in which the required cooling capacity is provided on the as-a-service model (XaaS). This involves owner/operators paying only for the output of the systems and services and not having the purchase the necessary air-conditioning systems themselves. This switch from passive ownership to efficient use relieves the budget of high capital investment. At no time are customers responsible for the chillers as owners. Nor are there any fixed monthly payments with this model as there are with leasing. The monthly billing of COOLaaS is based on a fixed rate which is calculated on every kilowatt hour consumed and which includes all products, installation, maintenance, servicing and spare parts. Customers can thus enjoy the benefits of a modern STULZ air-conditioning solution whilst making potential savings in the long term. What is more, the financing model can be flexibly expanded and supports the implementation of a pay-as-you-grow strategy.

Walter Meier AG is responsible for sales in Switzerland. This company, which sells and services air-conditioning equipment, has been a STULZ partner for many years and can call on extensive expertise in data center cooling and in implementing STULZ air-conditioning solutions.

STULZ has a broad range of high-quality cooling solutions. In the CyberAir series, the company provides an efficient precision air-conditioning system whose maximum efficiency and cooling capacity make it ideal for use in high-density data centers. In large-scale cooling applications, the integrated free-cooling option with sliding mixed mode of CyberCool 2-series cold-water chillers achieves reduced energy consumption in the long term.

Elimination of hot spots and pinpoint cooling of high-density zones with no need for structural alterations to the data center

Integrated sensors ensure the required amount of cold air is determined automatically, so precisely the right airflow is always supplied. Depending on the specific volumetric airflow required, the air is supplied either purely passively via adjustable louvers, or actively via an integrated, speed-regulated EC fan.

Hamburg, 31/1/2017 – STULZ, the German specialist in data center air conditioning is updating its range for efficient airflow management. The units in the AirModulator and AirBooster series have benefited from extensive upgrades and a new design. Like the previous generation, the new AirModulator 2 and AirBooster 2 models from STULZ can be installed in the existing raised floor with the greatest of ease. There, they infinitely regulate the existing airflow and therefore ensure targeted, on-demand cooling of the individual server racks.

Typical areas of application are high-density or blade servers with a high performance density or areas with an extreme processor load. Furthermore, integrated sensors ensure the required amount of cold air is determined automatically, so precisely the right airflow is always supplied. Depending on the specific volumetric airflow required, the air is supplied either purely passively via self-regulating louver dampers or actively via fan-assisted raised floor grilles.

The "AirBooster 2" from STULZ generates an airflow of up to 4,360 m³/h via an EC fan, and can reliably discharge heat loads of more than 20 kW, to suit the permitted operating temperature of the servers. The air conduction fins in the AirBooster 2 are manually adjustable and can be aimed at two different zones. The fan speed is controlled on the basis of temperature using a mean value from three sensors in total. These can be mounted on the rack at different heights, where they record the current server inlet temperature of the supply air at all times.

The STULZ "AirModulator 2", on the other hand, manages without fan assistance, but is equipped with a motor-driven louver damper. Here too, the damper is opened and closed in line with the temperature. In addition, airflow management solutions from STULZ can also be supplied with pressure control, in order to automatically compensate pressure differences between different cold aisle zones, for example, and so ensure correct, on-demand airflows throughout the data center. The ventilation grilles of STULZ airflow management solutions are also available in a heavy duty version on request, for withstanding high mechanical loads.

The heavy duty version can also bear the weight of lift trucks.

Data centers with air conditioning by means of precision air conditioning units basically have two main types of control: the Control of air conditioning units based on the air inlet temperature (so-called return air temperature control) and the Control of air conditioning units based on the air outlet temperature (so-called supply air temperature control).

Return air temperature control is the best known and also the most widespread type of control. The CRAC or CRAH are equipped with temperature sensors (combined temperature and humidity sensors, as a rule) in the vicinity of the air inlet. A setpoint is set for the return air temperature and the unit controller keeps this setpoint stable. If the airflow is constant, fluctuations in the data center heat load influence the supply air temperature.

The supply air temperature is the temperature of the air as it leaves the air conditioning unit. It is approximately the same as the server inlet temperature. If the return air setpoint is set to 33 °C, for example, and the data center air conditioning system is designed for a temperature difference of 15 K, under full load the supply air temperature would be 18 °C. Since full load is seldom reached in a data center, but instead a partial load of 40 % to 60 % is common, the supply air temperature – at a constant airflow – would be 24 °C to 27 °C.

Diagram 1 shows the supply air temperatures produced at a return air temperature of 33 °C, a constant airflow and a temperature difference of 15 K at full load for various partial load scenarios.

news-1438 Thu, 15 Dec 2016 14:14:35 +0100 More than just "advertising" http://www.stulz.de/en/newsroom/blog/more-than-just-advertising-1438/ Marketing is a department that you especially look forward to during your apprenticeship. There you... Marketing is a department that you especially look forward to during your apprenticeship. There you come across exciting and fascinating projects and the work is very diverse.

Many people associate Marketing purely with advertising, and this is a misconception. Rather, its mission is to lend the company a corporate identity that extends from its products to external and internal communications. To do this, it must continuously keep an eye on the market and the competition, and ensure that the STULZ brand is kept constantly up-to-date in the minds of potential and existing customers. It does this on the internet – on the website and social media, for instance – and through PR work. It is pursuing a permanent and ongoing objective.

Unlike in other departments, here nearly everyone does something different and is an expert in their field – there is hardly any overlap. And precisely because of this, continual communication and keeping each other up to speed are especially important. I have rarely seen as much internal communication as in Marketing.

The Monday meetings, lasting roughly an hour, are key to this exchange. Here, everyone reports on what they are currently working on and how projects are progressing. I was also able to attend these meetings, which doesn't go without saying for an apprentice, but it enabled me to understand better how the various strands of the department are interconnected.

Marketing colleagues also often get together outside the Monday meetings to exchange information and gain a bit of advice now and then. Although everyone is always extremely busy, they are always ready to lend an ear to other colleagues.

I was also entrusted with projects for which I alone was responsible.

One of these involved making an Advent calendar, which was then projected onto the large factory building as a PowerPoint presentation, and was hopefully enjoyed by colleagues. Contrary to my expectations, gathering ideas to ensure a good input was easy, and it was the design that took more work. I did of course receive support with this project. Our Group Leader for Communications helped me with planning and contributed ideas for the content. For its design, I approached our graphic designer, explained my ideas and he then made these a visual reality.

Aside from this project, I was always being given smaller jobs to do from the various areas of Marketing, which also helped me to better comprehend the operational running of the department.

At any rate, Marketing is a department the importance of which cannot be underestimated, where a working day flies by and you can learn a great deal.

news-1422 Wed, 30 Nov 2016 15:25:01 +0100 The Raised Floor http://www.stulz.de/en/newsroom/blog/the-raised-floor-1422/ Today, the raised floor is still an important element in many new data centers. But why? What is it... Today, the raised floor is still an important element in many new data centers. But why? What is it for, what does it do? Below are a few thoughts on the subject of raised floors.

To loosely quote DIN EN 50600 (also see "Data centre standard DIN EN 50600 (VDE 0801-600) in brief"), the raised floor is a system consisting of completely removable and exchangeable floor grills fitted onto adjustable base frames, which are interconnected by beams. Its purpose is to make the space under the floor available for facility services.

Now as ever, precision air conditioning units (CRAC or CRAH) are still the first choice for air conditioning data centers, even now in the age of in-row cooling, rack cooling and air handling units. This article does not go into the reasons for this. Instead, it deals with the raised floor which, in conjunction with precision air conditioning units, ensures maximum reliability and efficiency.

In the past, the raised floor concealed "facility services" such as power cables, data cables and piping, and the cold air had to painstakingly find its way through these to the air outlets. A good deal has changed since then. It is now common knowledge that the primary aim of the raised floor is to convey cold air to the servers, and so wiring is mostly routed above the racks. In addition, these days the height of the raised floor is planned to ensure that the air in this supply air duct has sufficient space to reach its destination without major losses or resistance.

It is vital that a raised floor is leak-proof if it is to be used for air distribution. Care must be taken to ensure that the cold air only leaves the raised floor in the direction of the servers where planned and where most effective. Leaks in cable glands, beneath racks or at wall connections must be meticulously sealed. Raised floor grills that are removed for maintenance purposes are a hindrance to air distribution. This should be reduced to the necessary minimum.
